What we built
This was a full off-grid electrical system: no utility interconnection, no meter, no grid to lean on when the weather turns. A 14.4 kW DC array on ground-mount racking, a matched battery and inverter package, and the excavation and concrete that hold all of it in place.

Ground mount was the right call here, and it usually is on open land. The array sits at a fixed tilt chosen for the site rather than whatever pitch a roof happens to have, it stays reachable for cleaning and service without ladders, and the roof stays a roof — no penetrations to worry about a decade from now. The trade is site work. Racking that has to carry a 14.4 kW array through New Mexico wind gets anchored in concrete, and concrete means excavation, forms, and cure time before a single module goes up.
How a month gets spent
Mid-June to mid-July — about four weeks from mobilization to a live system. On a build this size the calendar breaks down roughly like this:
- Design and procurement, before anyone is on site. Array layout, wire runs, battery and inverter selection, equipment order. Long-lead items decide when work can start, which is why this phase does not show up in photos but sets the whole schedule.
- Site work and concrete. Locating the array, excavating, setting racking anchors, and waiting on cure. This is the phase weather actually controls.
- Racking and modules. Once foundations are cured, steel and panels go up fast. It is the most visible part of the job and usually the shortest.
- Electrical. Battery bank, inverter, disconnects, grounding, conductor runs from the array to the equipment, and the interior side of the system.
- Commissioning and handoff. Testing under real load, setting inverter parameters, and walking the owner through a system they now operate themselves.
The middle of that list is where a schedule is won or lost. Concrete does not care about your calendar, and mid-June through July in New Mexico is monsoon season — afternoon storms are the normal case, not the surprise.
Where the money goes
The contract came to about $62,500. Owners always want to know how a number like that divides, and the honest answer for a full off-grid build is that hardware dominates.

That ratio is worth carrying into any bid comparison. Two quotes at the same headline price can hold very different hardware, and on an off-grid system the battery bank is the largest single line item — which makes it the fastest place for a low bid to get low. Ask for the equipment list before you compare prices. A system that saves you money on paper and runs out of stored energy in February has not saved you anything.
What we would do differently
Two things we carry forward from this build, and both are about sequencing rather than hardware.
Stage deliveries in the order the crew needs them. A build like this brings racking steel, modules, battery, inverter, and electrical materials to a rural site over several weeks. When material arrives ahead of the phase that consumes it, you are storing and re-handling expensive equipment on an open site; when it arrives behind, the crew is standing around. Tightening delivery sequencing to the actual phase order is the single highest-leverage scheduling change on a job of this size.
Buy weather windows instead of hoping for them. Concrete and monsoon season do not mix, and the cure sits directly between site work and everything visible. On a summer build we would rather pull the excavation and pour earlier in the schedule — even if it means the array sits staged a few extra days — than have a storm land on the one phase that cannot be rushed.
Neither of these is a complaint about how the job went. The system was built, it works, and the owner runs it. They are the adjustments that come out of paying attention to where the days actually went.
